南京英语教授翻译三字经

  “对中国人而言,《三字经》是朗朗上口的启蒙教材,但翻译成英语却很难同时兼顾押韵和中心思想。”孟凡君说,考虑到这个因素,他准备了两个版本,分押韵版和不押韵版。最终,出版社选择不押韵、意蕴更确切的版本。
  《三字经》曾被南京翻译公司翻译多次,迄今约有十几个英语版本,孟凡君的版本有什么不同?孟凡君说,此前的一些版本,要么不重阐述圣贤之道,要么不适合外国人的语言习惯。
  孟凡君说,他也得到过一些反馈意见,大家普遍认为他的版本最大特色是通俗易懂,没有语言上的拐外抹角。
  “这是几年前的作品,现在看来,当时对圣贤之道的了解还不够。如果现在再翻译的话,我会全部重来。”孟凡君说,比如“人之初,性本善”里的“善”并不是good,因为在《周易》里“继之者善也,成之者性也”,意思是人性自动走向圆满,这是人的本性,追求好的、圆满的。“把中国的圣贤之道自觉或不自觉地自然继承下去,这就是善。”因此,孟凡君认为,这就没法翻译了,如果下次再翻,就只能做注释。
  作为教师的他
  读《红楼梦》超过70遍
  孟凡君是西南大学外国语学院的英语老师,但在学校,他却以讲《红楼梦》出名。他说,年轻时深受导师影响,关注中西古典文学,力求将中西古典文化完全贯通,所以对中西文化作品都很喜欢。
  从中学到现在,孟凡君熟读《红楼梦》已超过70遍。现在,他已经开始用毛笔抄写其中的经典段落,甚至默写一部分,“例如黛玉写的《桃花词》、大观园里的《海棠诗》、《菊花诗》等。”
  “有时读到《周易》《道德经》一些内容,脑海中会不自觉跳出《红楼梦》里的情节。因为,《红楼梦》本身融合以道儒佛为代表的中华传统文化。”孟凡君说,《红楼梦》帮助他将其他经典理解得更透彻。
  小赵是西南大学新闻传媒学院研二学生。他说:“课堂上,英语翻译孟老师运用了很多传统文化里的知识,例如讲到中医诊断,他甚至会提前请教中医。孟老师的课一般要提前2、3个小时才能抢座位,每周三讲《周易》,周五讲《红楼梦》,寒暑假还免费为学生开课。”
